The last post shows our pictures from today's cavern tours. Super awesome morning! After our underground adventure, we hit the road for a quick resupply stop and had no clue where we were headed.
After spending the last week and a half in the hot desert, I was ready to head back up to the cooler temps and the mountains. Earlier, while the kids and I toured, Steve did a little research and found a spot in Tonto National Forest for us to camp at. That became today's destination.
I took the wheel and we were off. From Tucson, we drove up 77. The landscape is beautiful, and the roads take you through reservation land and forest lands. Amazing drive. At one point, we had to stop for a construction pilot car. We did some off pavement driving past the highway work site.
We passed through rolling hills of Saguaro Cacti and Prickly Pear, beautiful wildflowers... yellows, purples, reds, and also some bright green plants and trees growing close to the rivers in the valleys we traveled in. What a surprise to find this incredible drive. We definitely welcomed it after working our way through Tucson traffic.
After we hit Globe, we turned north onto 60/77. Our mission was to find a campsite Steve had found on the map. The drive from Globe was only about a half an hour up to our mountain spot... Timber Camp.
Well, at our turnoff for the site, we came to see this... the gate was closed and locked (yes, Steve tried to unlock it.) After realizing it was a 'no go', he called the Forest Service office in Globe, hoping to reconnect with a Ranger who had suggested this site. It was now, dark, kids were hungry and Sierra was asking to go to bed... and we had no place to camp.
Steve had to leave a message for the Ranger, and then we turned the rig to head back down the road. Not one minute later, we found the real campsite. Hooray! I guess we had stopped at the horse campground first. Now, we are camped north of Globe and, again, it will be fun to wake up to see what lies outside our door. Tomorrow's plan is either: GO or STAY!
